Johanna Corcoran -- "nurturing the soul of family"

PEACELOVE PROFILE: FAMILYTOPIA

Familytopia.  Johanna Corcoran’s creation.  Bursting with originality. Savvy businesswoman.

“In all my years doing programming for kids and families, I have never seen a workshop like this. This is totally unique.” — Children’s Librarian at the East Smithfield (RI) Library, commenting on “The Day You Were Born” Program.

I have known Johanna for two years and am still dazzled by her energy and commitment.  I love talking to entrepreneurs who love what they do and are not afraid to tell others.

(Rich Streitfeld is your host and reporter, dressed in bold.  Johanna’s answers are directly below).

Johanna, please describe what Familytopia does:

Familytopia helps busy parents nurture the soul of their family through workshops, events and a free, monthly e-newsletter.

You made a “leap” couple of years back – left a secure job and struck out on your own. Did you have misgivings? Or do you have “ice in your veins” like great pitchers and quarterbacks?

Yes, I had misgivings it took me almost a year from the formation of the business concept to actually leave my secure and safe job. A few things made it easier though: a husband with health insurance, a great support system, and the rock solid conviction that I had something to offer that people wanted and needed.

I love the Birth Story program. Tell us about it – you must have heard some great stories!
This is one of my “pet projects”. I’m working to start a movement of parents who gift their children with the emotional, spiritual story of their birth. The overarching theme is that if children are raised hearing soulful stories of their birth, they will see themselves for the miracles they truly are- and go forth into the world possessing strong self-esteem and a conviction that they are here for a purpose. I offer workshops to groups of parents who want to learn the process.

Johanna, Familytopia is not a social service agency – but I am guessing that people open up to you and you hear more than your share of family troubles. I mean, it’s not all love and light is it?

Nope. I think that’s actually where a lot of parents encounter their stress. Thinking they need to have a family that is skipping through a field of daisies… That’s just not the way most families exist. What I try to remind parents is that conflict is okay- and needed- for within the family is the first place children start to learn how to manage conflict. Familytopia is about communication. For better or for worse.

Your client list includes some major players on the local scene – Amica, Lifespan, Blue Cross. Can a small company afford your services?
I’ve been told I do not charge enough! Does that answer your question? ;) No really, I believe so strongly in the impact of my workshops and events that I want to make it a “no brainer” for a company of any size to use my offerings. I’ve been very fortunate to have had some of Rhode Island’s larger companies hire me early on- but I’ve also helped parents at many smaller companies.

Why do you think there is such a crying need for your services right now?

Most parents work- and are torn between their job responsibilities and their parental responsibilities. They crave quick and easy ways they can help their children develop into wonderful people. Familytopia workshops give parents the space to create an “action plan” around a particular topic, one that they can implement immediately. I like to think that parents spend an hour experiencing the workshop with me, and a lifetime experiencing it with their children.

For example?

I heard from a mom the other day who emailed me to share the success that her family was having with the family “Talk Box” (a suggestion from my “Family Moments in a Fast-Paced World” workshop). The Talk Box acts as a family “comment and kudo box” that everyone in the family contributes to throughout the week.  Then, once a week the family goes through the comments, suggestions and kudos together. It’s a great way to open the lines of communication. Her family was really loving it!

Crowdfunding: Funding Creativity through Social Networking

Here is a balanced and comprehensive article about crowdfunding, which I have blogged about at length.  From the article:  “Welcome to the world of crowdfunding — a style of fundraising that taps support from fans and other interested parties. While politicians and charities have used this method for ages, the adoption of social networking makes crowdfunding feasible even for the average citizen with a dream and some creative talent.” For the full article:  (Note: These articles always seem to leave out RocketHub, which may be newer on the scene but has a robust educational arm.)

Sassy CPA

I am delighted to have been interviewed by “The Sassy Ladies” — a pioneering and successful enterprise launched here in Rhode Island a couple of years ago.  Their focus is helping women entrepreneurs but I have always considered myself an honorary “Sassy Lady”.  The interview speaks for itself – click here:

Credit Scores, Home Offices, Family Lending and Comic Torah?

Straddling Worlds

By Hal Mayforth for Wall Street Journal

A troika! No — A smorgasbord!  I am attaching three (count em) three articles for your pleasure in between shopping and finishing your kids’ homework.  Did you know that unpaid library fines can affect your  score?! Is it true that closing a cc account can help your score?

Check out this illuminating article from Quizzlewire here:

Trying to decide whether to work from home or rent an office?  Sometimes there is no choice but if there is, read this little article. One helpful tip — if you are working from home but need occasional meeting space there are more and more facilities around town that let you rent meeting space by the hour and day. Read more

True Stories — Start-ups for Under $150

It can be done.  Not necessarily easily.  But possible. Here are three creative examples — a culinary tour of a major city; a flooring business that got started with some clever collaboration; and a bracelet importer who donated over 20,000! items to charity to get the word out.  Do YOU have any stories to share? “But Officer……” The Hazards of Late Tax Filing

Grrrrrrr......

Grrrrrrrr.......

Call it the miracle of compound interest.  Or the government’s interest in collecting taxes.  However you cut it, your household or business can easily rack up hundreds or thousands of dollars in late fees even if you are just a few months tardy.  Here is the least you should know:

  1. Interest and penalties are assessed at both the federal and state level.
  2. For personal taxes if you do not owe then there is no assessment.
  3. Have a couple of  partners in your business?  Just a couple months late could run you close to $1,000 even if it is a LLC or type of corporation that pays no tax directly. Diss it for a year or more and it’s a nightmare.

Then there is the funny (not really) issue of what constitutes “late”.  If you owe taxes and you filed an “extension” you are still going to get hit — and hit hard if you owe a lot.  As it says in scripture — “it is an extension to file, not to pay”.  That’s why professionals tell their clients to estimate and pay their liability by April 15 even if their information is not yet organized for filing.

The good news? Okay I won’t call it good — but penalties can be appealed (interest is statutory) and my experience is that usually the people on the other end are reasonable.  But the process takes time — the time on the phone, the time to resolve it, and money — especially on personal returns you are generally expected to “pay now, appeal later”.  And if you have to hire a professional….well, you get the picture.

Breast Pumps, Acne Cream and an Easier Way to Save Taxes on Medical Expenses

Can I Deduct or Not?Are breast pumps tax-deductible?  Acne cream? Again, the answers may surprise you.  (Click here to read the fascinating article).  But no matter what you can deduct as medical expenses on your tax return, there is a way you AND your employer can save significant payroll taxes: set up a “Section 125 Cafeteria Plan” for employee contributions to health insurance.  It’s a win-win, and helps offset those ever-increasing premiums.  Do not assume  your employer knows!

While you are at it ask your employer about “flexible spending accounts” for out-of-pocket medical costs.  It is another win-win and allows you to deduct some eligible medical expenses much more easily than you could on your tax return.

These plans often require a third-party administrator but there are providers that offer these services at a little or no charge.  Write to me privately for details.

Power to the Creative Class! (Crowdfunding Bootcamp) (click on title to comment)

CrowdFundingMany of you — (and believe meI count!)  responded with interest to my recent posts on “Crowdfunding — A New Way to Fund and Follow Creativity”.  That post used Kickstarter as an example of a crowdfunding site.  This post is about another company, Rockethub, which also offers what it calls (a free online)  “CrowdFunding Bootcamp”. (The link is here:) They appear to cover all the elements of this new and exciting platform — who to ask first/how to choose a financial goal/what to include in your upload/tips for Rewards……

Rockethub.org  defines its mission as “to educate and empower the rising Creative Class. This is where you learn the principles necessary to become a crowdfunding revolutionary.”  Hey, hey (Che, che?)  count me in.

Okay I haven’t read the tutorial but the whole crowdfunding enterprise excites me. Click on the article title at top if you want to comment. (Because believe me, I count!)

Paper Doll

Kickstarter (and RocketHub and others)  are new type of  funding platforms for all you “artists, designers, filmmakers, musicians, journalists, inventors, explorers.”  (no, you do not have to be a Client.).  Described as a “new way to fund and follow creativity. Kickstarter aggregates pledges online — if the  project does not meet its target within a specified time frame the pledges are cancelled.  Another example of  online community getting it done.  (Several Rhode Island projects are being funded).  Click here  for details.

Think it’s crazy? Project at right got 14 backers and raised more than the modest $600 it needed – there are plenty out there that have raised thousands. Fascinated.  What do you think? Click on title of article (top of page) to link to comment page.

Let me See– LLC? Of Course — S Corp? Hmmm…..

EVERY start-up — and many existing businesses — wrestles with what sort of “entity” to be.  There are a host of factors — cost, liability, tax benefits, complexity. No one article can cover all the mutations and individual variables, and one should always consult a professional (yes, I do a fair amount of consulting on this issue).

You may read the full article here, and as always I encourage you to comment or rate it. Thanks.
