How Do I Divorce Thee? (Another Site I Love)

Divorce mediation Rhode IslandLet me count the ways.  Financial, emotional, legal, physical.  This site addresses divorce from multiple perspectives.  Look at the array of articles – “When Divorce Happens Over Forty”, How Personality Disorders Drive (aggressive) Family Court Litigation” – this is not just about money and custody (which are expertly covered as well).  As divorce survivors, founders Lori and Kevin Grover understand the unique trauma divorce is to each spouse and child. Originally Divorce Resource Center of Rhode Island, RIDMC collaborates with professionals across the board to assist its clients (full disclosure: I am one.) And the site just gives stuff away –clean, comprehensive listings of local family courts. A concise summary of Rhode Island divorce laws — in English, not legalese. Who knew? As befits this approach, local attorney Jeanne LaPiana hosts a free legal seminar on divorce twice per month at RIDMC’s offices, in Cranston, Rhode Island.  Whether in business or divorce I like to think that a foundation of openness and collaboration can succeed.

TAX TIPS FOR DIVORCING COUPLES

Tax Tips for Divorcing Couples peaceloveandbusinessplanning.com

By Rich Streitfeld, CPA

Impoverishing One Impoverishes All

If at all possible try to think as an economic unit, at least until the divorce is final.  You are right, your spouse  is a louse– and you do need to have your financial needs met in a fair and equitable fashion.  However when one party tries to grab all the tax benefits at the expense of the other, all may lose out – less money for the kids, more money for the lawyers.   For instance if Sharon refuses to sign a joint return while the divorce is in process and Greg makes more money, she may save $500 but he may lose $5,000.  This may make Sharon happy, but may also make a settlement more elusive, drag out the proceedings and make it more difficult for Greg to provide for his share of any agreement.

Divorce — Keeping it Sane

Divorce

Is it possible?  I don’t know, but I took some of my own knowledge — professional and otherwise — and wrote a small essay with some suggestions on the financial piece.  You can read “Divorce Can be Taxing  — Tips and Traps — by clicking here: I also encourage you to check out Divorce Resource Center of Rhode Island.  The site — http://drcri.net/-- offers a wealth of resources, and is offering a seminar in late January called  “Getting to a Healthy Financial and Emotional Divorce”.  Couples may not agree on much — but they ought to at least share that goal — for themselves and their partners and families.

“Money and the Turning of the Age”

I discovered a philosopher-activist named Charles Eisenstein just a few weeks ago.  Now, like a close friend  I cannot imagine living without him – and his brilliant perspective.  He has written one book called “The Ascent of Humanity — The Evolution of the Human Sense of Self”.  Another one is coming — “Scared Economics”.  He combines a radical perspective, spiritual insight and brilliant analysis in a provocative and original way.  Here is a sample — Money and the Turning of the Age” – it is a long read but it takes only seconds to sense his unique approach.  Get to the end and you may or may  not buy his solution — but I cannot quarrel with its originality or the compassionate and wise place it springs from.

Dilemmas: Of End of Life (Pet) Care and Health Savings Accounts

The cost of health care is skyrocketing — for humans and for pets.  (But we get to pay for both).  Between technology and our ever-growing love for our pets, the prices are through the roof.  The same end-of-life care questions we face with mom we face with our pets, now that there is a way to keep them alive longer.  Innovative solutions abound.  For Fido, there is pet insurance. Or just pay the $20,000 tab (see article here). The article also details some of the costs you can expect to incur these days with pet care.

For humans there are Health Savings Accounts.  A peculiarly American approach, it gives you a premium and tax break in return for a higher deductible.  The details are mesmerizing.  Ask me!

Since you asked — like everyone our family struggles with outrageous premiums.  This year I sat down with my insurance broker to review my options, including “HSA’s”.  It took over a week, multiple phone calls and spreadsheets to understand the HSA.  Let’s see — there is your in-network and your out of network.  They each have separate deductibles.  Deductibles for individuals and for the family. And then you have to estimate your health costs for the next year to see whether you really will get a benefit (one benefit of an HSA is that if you have extensive costs and max your deductible, you are covered 100%, no co-pays).

In the end we decided to jump into an HSA.  I’ll keep you posted on how it goes.  Meanwhile, it is worth noting that HSA’s are essentially unregulated and — you guessed it — there have been scandals.  At least one company has gone under with millions of $ of deposits.  The grizzly details are here.

Next I am sure someone will come up with Health Savings Accounts for Dogs** and figure out a way to make it tax-deductible.

** It was not so long ago that dependents’ social security numbers were not required on tax returns.  When they were, the country lost millions of “dependents”!

Breast Pumps, Acne Cream and an Easier Way to Save Taxes on Medical Expenses

Can I Deduct or Not?Are breast pumps tax-deductible?  Acne cream? Again, the answers may surprise you.  (Click here to read the fascinating article).  But no matter what you can deduct as medical expenses on your tax return, there is a way you AND your employer can save significant payroll taxes: set up a “Section 125 Cafeteria Plan” for employee contributions to health insurance.  It’s a win-win, and helps offset those ever-increasing premiums.  Do not assume  your employer knows!

While you are at it ask your employer about “flexible spending accounts” for out-of-pocket medical costs.  It is another win-win and allows you to deduct some eligible medical expenses much more easily than you could on your tax return.

These plans often require a third-party administrator but there are providers that offer these services at a little or no charge.  Write to me privately for details.
